They will put a catheter up your urethra (I can see you cringing from here), inject your bladder with a potassium solution, then drain your bladder, then inject your bladder again with a mild saline solution. If you feel more pain with the potassium solution, then you likely have interstitial cystitis. I took meds for five years, and I no longer take the meds and have very few symptoms. I wish you the best—I know exactly what you’re going through, and it’s not fun. What helped me most was a low-dose, long-term antibiotic (Macrobid). Antibiotics are not supposed to help people with I.C., but it helped me, so my doctor prescribed it. He changed my life for the better. I am eternally grateful to him. GOOD LUCK!!

Yes I was Dx about 5 years ago and before that I was suffering for about 2 years before the doctors ever dx the problem. They just kept telling me that I was having UTIs which I knew better, but anyway, yes my lower right side of my back, like right over my kidney hurts constantly. Sometimes the pain is terrible. This is a very serious and painful condition which most people dont understand. It always helps to have someone to talk to about the same things you are going through. If you would like to email me, its bethjohnson747@yahoo.com.

Good Luck to you~!

I’ve never heard of there being a problem with any kind of nut unless you have a nut allergy to begin with. These are the foods they usually tell you to eliminate…..
Coffee, tea, soda, alcohol, and citrus juices including cranberry juice
Foods and drinks with artificial sweeteners (aspartame and saccharin)
Hot peppers and spicy foods
Some foods with high potassium levels, like avocados, bananas, chocolate, and oranges

This is a difficult disease to diagnose and to treat effectively. It is not deadly.
The first link is a support group and the second detailed information on the disease.

I have just been diagnosed with IC, I was wondering if anyone else has this disease? How do you cope? What is the best treatment for you? Does it affect your daily activities?

I have IC. I was just diagnosed with it within the last year after suffering with the symptoms for over nine years. I’m a male with IC and it is rare for males to have it (I think about 95% of the people who have it are female). Also, I’ve heard it is harder to diagnose in males (since there are a number of other male symptoms that mimic IC). I am on Elmeron (the only FDA approved medication at this time for this condition) and it helps. Watch your diet and see what foods/drinks seem to make it worse. Talk with your Doctor to see what treatments/medications are avaiable for you. Read up on it (there are a lot of resources out there) and become as educated as you can about it. Even though I try not to let it affect my daily activities it sometimes does and there’s not much I can do about it but just keep pressing on. I am determined not to let it beat me. Since I was just diagnosed within the last year, I’m still trying to see what diet/medication/treatments helps my symptoms the best. Just remember, you are not alone and there are a number of support groups out there. I hope the best for you and good luck!

I have interstitial cystitis. I get flare-ups from time to time and they usually last a few days. I got one suddenly today and it’s worse than they have been in a long time.

Normally it wouldn’t be of any concern. I’d deal with it as I normally do. However, I have school tomorrow. It’s very uncomfortable having to use the restroom every 10 minutes and on top of that having to deal with this terrible pain. I’m considering staying home from school, but some part of me feels guilty (even though i’m in pain!).

Anyone with IC have any advice? I’m stumped as to what I should do.

I.C hurts.I know,me too.Stay home and drink lots of water, avoid spicy foods-tomatoes,caffeine,greasy foods.Just go with as much water and a boring, bland diet for a few days.Hey don’t stress it out, take care of you. You’ll be miserable at school so stay home and chill.Have a friend bring your classwork and do your work in BED,E
