Symptoms of UTI in male dog?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I’ve never had a male dog before but think he’s got a UTI or possible bladder/kidney infection. Since the day I got him he has not peed in his crate and the last 2 days that’s all he’s done. He’s also increased his occurance of peeing in the house, even peeing as he walked down the stairs the other day.

His pee has always had a strong smell to it as he’s been on antibiotics almost continuously for various issues these last 3 months. I know UTI’s and other related infections are very common in female dogs especially when on antibiotics but was wondering how it affected male dogs and if they are just as succeptible.

Then I was wondering if there was a probiotic out there to help him get rid of the infection instead of feeding him his 3rd antibiotic in approx 4 months.

I haven’t had any experience with a male dog with UTIs only a female and the symptoms are pretty much as you described – frequent peeing (sometimes blood visible in the urine). I never saw any blood but it was always there when the sample was tested. While a probiotic isn’t a bad idea since your dog has been continuously on antibiotics (www.b-naturals.com), it will not take care of a UTI. UTIs are caused by either bacteria or e-coli which adhere to the bladder wall and can cause stones to form if untreated by appropriate meds. Unfortunately there’s no quick fix either by diet or over the counter products. Good luck.

Can I still have symptoms after being treated for Chlamydia? Please help.?

I went to see my doctor recently (2/8/2010) because I was experiencing unusual symptoms with my genitalia. I feared that I might have an STI. My doctor took a urine sample, urethral swab and blood samples. In the meantime he prescribed me ciprofloxacin (1 x 500 mg tablets twice daily) because there were puss cells in my urine sample and he thought it could be a UTI.

I was diagnosed with Chlamydia on 2/16/2010 by my doctor and was immediately prescribed 1 dose of 1g (2 x 500mg) of Azithromycin to treat it. I went right to the pharmacy and took it immediately. Since then I have seen dramatic improvements in my symptoms, however, it is now 2/27/2010 and I am still experiencing some small symptoms:

Barely if any discharge (but still present during some parts of the day).

A cold almost wet feeling at the tip of my penis.

no pain during urination and so forth. It is just still bothering me that the infection may not be completely gone.

My question is, did the first dose of Zithromax clear the infection up completely or could there be traces of the infection still present? It’s been over 10 days and i still have some small barely noticeable symptoms, but still annoying. Do I need to just wait longer? I’ve read it takes 1-2 weeks after treatment for it to clear up.

Or are my symptoms just an after effect of the treatment? Perhaps the infection left some irreversible damage?

And, do I need to take another dose of the Zithromax? I’m nervous that the infection is not completely gone.

Please help, I am going to see my doctor again on 3/5/2010 to be tested again.

I am a 25 year old male, have no girlfriend and the last sexual encounter was a week before I went to see my doctor (2/2/2010).

Thank you.

Chlamydia infection can be effectively cured with antibiotics once it is detected. Current Centers for Disease Control guidelines provide for the following treatments:

Azithromycin 1 gram oral as a single dose, or Doxycycline 100 milligrams twice daily for seven to fourteen days.

What could these symptoms indicate?

I’m 14, male, 5"7 and fairly slim, if thats relevant.

In November I had a UTI which I was treated with antibiotics for, and that cleared up (if thats relevant).

Anyway, for the past 3 weeks I have been experiencing these symptoms:

I am, having light abdominal cramps, but hardly painful. I am also having a slight burning sensation when I urinate. However, I am not using the toilet more often or anything like that. But about three weeks ago, on one day, 2 or 3 times when I went to use the toilet, there was some blood in the urine. That was painless, though. One more thing I’ve been having is back pain, seeminlgy where my kidneys are. My urine has not always been right, either. Like, it looks a little more cloudy but you can’t see it cloudy when its in the toilet bowl. Also, sometimes when I feel like I have to go, I don’t need to go that much, but I still can go, just not AS much as I expected.

But today I went to the toilet (this happened a few days ago once aswell), when I urinated, I had a fairly intense shooting pain in my middle-right abdomen which lasted a few seconds.

What do you think is wrong with me? Could the UTI be returning? As last time when I had the UTI, I had blood in my urine, and that was the beginning of my other symptoms too, which is the case here. But I’m not sure. What do you think?

Thanks.

You appear to have a kidney infection (also a UTI). Because you are 14, I am not going to suggest what I do for kidney infections which works for me. Also this could be a sign of a more serious kidney problem and I hope that you have spoken to your parents because it is time to go back to the doctor for a couple of tests and a diagnosis followed by treatment.

There are a few possibilities on the infection side. One is that your bladder infection (UTI) began in your kidneys but was only noticed as back pain until it spread to your bladder or urethra. Or the original infection had already moved to your kidneys and was never completely cured. Or whatever caused the initial problem was repeated except that this time the infection began in your kidneys/

Please print the link below and show it to your parents so that you are aware of the possibilities:
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec11/ch142/ch142b.html
"Blood in the urine may be caused by infection, stones, tumors, injuries, or other problems in the bladder, urethra, ureters, or kidneys.
About half of the people who have blood in the urine without pain have a disorder affecting primarily certain specialized blood vessels of the kidney (glomeruli).
Sometimes, sickle cell anemia or a related disorder is the cause. Blood in the urine with pain is often the result of a kidney, bladder, or prostate infection or a stone or a blood clot moving through one of the ureters or the urethra"

The only thing that matters about what we think is that kidney issues need medical attention to rule out possibilities and to focus on the correct diagnosis.

A simple link which connects all 3 symptoms to a UTI:

One last complicated link with all 3 symptoms:

And that is a very good reason to see the doctor again.

I might add that it would be good to eat bio-active yogurt especially after a course of antibiotics as those meds can play havoc with the friendly fauna in your intestinal tract – which could cause pain. If you don’t like yogurt then a good quality acidophilus is in order.

Best wishes – that back pain is no fun.
