UTI Remedy Report

Cystitis from 'rough sex'?

Hi, I first got cystitis a few years ago when I didnt drink anything at a theme park on a hot day – lesson learnt! But I occassionally get it now from rough sex – is this kind of cystitis bacterial, and as such is it worth going to the doctor? Also, is there any risk my partner could get it (as I read on another 'answer')? If so, how? What are the symptoms? I didn't know that men could!
And I haven't tried over-the-counter remedies, but I'm chugging water and cranberry juice!

If you are not sure, visit the doctor. Your partner will not get the cystitis from you. Taking just one antibiotic before and after is not going to help. Cranberry juice seems to help, particularly the white cranberry juice. If this continues to be an ongoing problem, you might consider checking with your gyn. You should not have to suffer with this as often as you do.

Your partner will not get it. I don't know about cranberry juice.

"If having sex seems to cause your infections, your doctor may suggest that you take a single low dose antibiotic pill after you have sex to prevent urinary tract infections."

Rough? Sex does not have to be rough to get cystitis. You must always empty your bladder prior to intercourse. It usually requires a doctor visit. If you let it go too long you may start to see-blood in your urine. We call this type of cystitis "honeymoon cystitis"

You can get cystitis from having any type of sex. There's a bacteria called e.coli which is commonly found around your anus and can be pushed into the area surrounding your urethra during sex. I'd definitely go to the dr. Males can get them but its less common as they have a longer urethra than females and its also located further away from the anus than the female's. Symptoms for males suffering cystitis are the same as for females. Cranberry juice is antibacterial so it inhibits the growth of bacteria but doesn't actually kill them. Antibiotics should be used if its a bad infection as they are bacteriacidal so they actually kill the bacteria causing the infection. Cranberry juice alters urine pH and keeps it acidic, preventing bacteria from growing, so it would be good to drink that frequently to prevent further infections from occuring. Just make sure that you pass urine before and shortly after sex to clean the area and flush any bacteria away.
