why do women develop cystitis more frequently than men?

Most of the above answers are incorrect. The simple reason is that women have a shorter urethra and its opening is close to the vagina and perineum, that are colonized by lots of (possibly pathogenic) bacteria.

A very effective way to avoid cystitis in sexually active women is to urinate after intercourse. In sexually inactive women/girls cystitis should be investigated more thoroughly.

The urethra (where the wee comes out) is shorter in women than it is in men. So if you don't wipe properly or have sex the germs that are hanging around travel up the urethra and cause infection. I t is also called the honeymooners disease because lots of sex can irritate the urethra a nd cause an infection
