Natural remedies for Feline Cystitis?
My cat has had a bout of recurring cystitis. We've taken her to the vet a few times only to be charged money for pills that work but he problem reoccurs. I'd rather not spend £50 each time but find a natural home made remedy.
I've heard cranberry juice or Apple Cider Vinegar is good? What do others think? Thank you
Chronic recurring cystitis is something that can happen when cats are fed a mainly dry diet.
Firstly I would change her diet to wet food. That in itself may help the problem.
Secondly I would get some Urinary Food for her. Royal Canin sell Urinary wet food and also Urinary Biscuits. Can be obtained through your vet or online.
This alters the ph. acid alkali balance in the bladder so that bacteria can not build up. It also dilutes the urine.
There is also a capsule you can buy. It is called Cystease. Available from your vet or online. Break one open and sprinkle it on her food each day. This helps to line the bladder and stop bacteria attaching itself and building up.
These two things should prevent attacks happening. Or if you see an attack starting then immediately start on these.
There is also a very effective substance called D-Mannose. Available on line. It is marvellous for Cystitis and clears it within a day or so. A cat dose is half a heaped teaspoonful mixed with a few drops of water and mixed into her food twice each day. Here's the link. http://www.dmannose.co.uk/
I have a cat with chronic cystitis that was left to continue far too long, and it damaged the bladder. The bladder wall calcified because of the constant inflammation, and an operation was needed, but it did not help the problem as the vet could not remove the calcification, it was too deeply inbedded.
The cat is now permanently on pain killers and anti inflammatories just to give it a reasonable quality of life.
So I would say that it is very important to deal with the causes of why your cat is getting the recurring cystitis.
Always make sure there is fresh water for her too.
Hope some of this helps.

You need a alkalizer powder for your cat's water, like bicarb soda, to remove discomfort. Then needs some antibiotic. I think human antibiotic not really interchangeable. I have some cat herbal books in my clinic, I can look it up, if you need further help, or I recommend that if this keep happening, get some books from Amazon on pets and natural therapies

if your cat is taken constant cystitis there must be something wrong with her, you know how sore this is dont you, there could be some other underlying thing causing this , i know i took cystitis once a month for a year and they discovered, i had a prolapse causing the cystitis, they fixed the prolapse and i have not had it since , the cat needs to go back to vet to find out the cause , as for dried cat food that can cause it as it is not getting enough moisture ,i have a cat who is 19 never had cystitis once in its life neither has the other one who is 14years had it once mind you they also have never had dried cat food once either, no one could convince me to give dried cat food it also causes constipation which again is lack of moisture you need to get to bottom of this with your vet
