My male (neutered) cat has hat a recent change in the order of his urine. It is so strong that you can smell it across 2 floors in my home.
No changes in his diet and he was neutered over 7 years ago. The change in the order just changed last week. I watched him for UTI symptoms and I have not seen anything out of the ordinary.
Any advice?
Hi Bethany…if your cats urine has become stronger and darker in colour it could be indicative of a lower urinary tract disorder (e.g struvite/oxalate crystals, kidneys, etc). Generally when the colour and odour changes means the urine pH has changed to be more alkaline rather than acidic. Alkaline urine pH is caused by dry food diets therefore by adding moisture to his diet such as canned food (like cranberry juice does for humans) will acidify the urine.

Just because you don't see anything out of the ordinary, doesn't mean it is not there. You need to take your cat to the vet, as this sounds like either a UTI or possibly Chrystal's that build up in an older cats bladder. Don't wait, as the cat may be, or could soon be in pain.

take a sample of his urine in a clean bottle or plastic bowl, and take it to the vets office they can run a urinalysis on it there to see if he has a infection, you can get a clean sample by putting a foil baking pan in place of the litter box, put some clear craft beads in it so he can scratch them around, (they think it's litter)

Hi,
The above answer could very well be true – your cat could be developing 'crystals' in his bladder. This is common in neutered males and causes a very strong odor from their urine. It can also cause your cat to be in a lot of pain and needs to be treated right away. Take a urine sample to the vet for testing and if it is positive your cat will need meds as well as a special diet to take care of the crystals. If they are not treated, a blockage/build-up of crystals could occur which is very serious and painful for the cat. Read the link for more info.

Hi there , I have had that expierince i think , and i think that it was a stress issue , but also , his body could be changing and if he get excited or smell a female around that might do it it should stop but if not i would call the vet and ask him if he did it right 7 yrs ago lol , for real ,
